Businesses discover the utility of social media goes beyond marketing.

People are always asking me, what is the utility of social media for businesses?  A lot of people think that in business, social media can only be used as a marketing tool.  And why wouldn’t they?  I’ve been managing social accounts full time for two years now, and all for the last 728 days, all of my social efforts have been directed towards marketing.

This doesn’t have to be the case.  You don’t have to think too far outside the box to see that Twitter could be a great customer service tool for your company, as long as you have the manpower to monitor your Twitter network.  Social media can also be a great tool for public relations; beyond networks like Haro and Muck Rack; many journalists now accept pitches exclusively on Twitter.

What about social media and human resources.  Currently, the only time I hear about these two fields commingling is when a company gets sued for requiring social media passwords as part of their interview process.  I think it’s very strange that this is the case, because in my opinion, good use of social media could make the lives of HR professionals much easier.

According to this article from Forbes, human resource professionals are starting to catch on, and these hiring and firing experts are using social media as more than a recruiting tool.  The Forbes article covers gamification, the death of the resume, Klout scores, and personal branding.

Gamification is the practice of making real life more like a videogame.  This practice has been wildly successful for Vail Resorts (check out Epic Mix) and used by consulting giant Deloitte to reward employees and students in their training program.  I’m on the fence about posting my skiing stats on a social network, but I am ALL FOR anything that makes a management training program more fun.

Do you have a good idea for a phone application?  Great, develop it.  Do you have a good idea for a social network?  Even better!  Working in internet marketing has taught me two absolute truths: Interactive online media is here to stay, and people love social networks.  Even if you don’t create the next Facebook, a good gamification attempt will be awesome for your business.

Resumes are the new facsimile machines, in 5 years they will be completely obsolete.  Hopefully, that insight isn’t coming as a surprise to you.   What does that mean?  It means that you should be placing a high priority on managing your LinkedIn account.  Interact, hustle for endorsements, and solicit recommendations.

Previously, personal branding and Klout scores were things that only mattered to marketing professionals.  But as resumes become obsolete, your influence in social media is becoming more and more important.  This means that you need to get on Klout, and you need to work on becoming more of a social media influencer.  Start by increasing the frequency of your posts.  Not all of your posts will generate interactivity, but initially, playing the volume game is going to show you what works, and what doesn’t work.

This blog isn’t targeted towards job seekers, online marketers, or even HR professionals.  If you are a business owner, and you’re looking to attract tech savvy talent, you need to focus on developing your personal brand, and you need to focus on gamifying (verbs can always be turned into adjectives right?) your company.  Think about how you would attract an employee with a good Klout score.  Your would influence them on social media, right? (Right.)
