How to Get Started with a Facebook Profile Starting at Square One

May. 1, 2013 | Posted by The Alternative Board

No, You're Not the Last Person to Join Facebook

This post is for the person who really knows they need to start a Facebook profile, yet feels like they're the last person on the planet to finally "hop on."

Don't feel embarrassed. Everyone has to start somewhere.

This post (and indeed the series of posts to soon follow) is titled Square One because that's where we'll start together. Today you can step into that first box of social media engagement, and it's fitting to begin with the most popular and prevalent channel being used today.

First of all, let's reaffirm that you're not the last person on the planet to create a Facebook profile. C|net, the site that knows everything from the best smartphones for your business staff to the best tablet for your grandson, says so:  At the start of 2013, there were 1.06 billion monthly active users on Facebook.

Google, another paragon of being in-the-know, wants to reassure you that it's impossible to be the last one on the Facebook bandwagon, since at last count in 2011 there were 6.97 billion people on the planet.

So take heart: You've got two renowned sources affirming you are not alone. And once you get on Facebook, being alone will be a sweet memory (we'll talk about healthy unplugging from social media in the future).

So How Do I Get On Facebook?

Easy, that's how. If you have an email address, you can do this. (If you don't, again we refer you to Google.)

  • Go to Facebook's website.
  • Sign up with your name, email address, a unique password, your DOB, and gender.
  • Facebook will walk you through three screens to: add friends from your email contacts; add your past affiliations (schools, companies); add your picture.
  • Confirm your email address.
  • Engage!
